ShieldingShielding

Shielding protects personnel from radiation exposure.  We recommend two different methods of shielding:  concrete and steel (and/or lead).  There are several considerations that should be taken into account when deciding which is best for you including:  available floor space, voltage of E-beam, construction cost in your region, and type of product to be treated.  Wasik Associates can help you choose the appropriate shielding for your application.

Wasik Associates builds self-shielded systems out of steel. (Typically for health and safety reasons, we do not use lead in our vaults.)  This provides a smaller footprint and lighter package than concrete vaults. Our self-shielded vaults can be disassembled into smaller sections for ease of shipping or plant relocation.  The interior of the vault is lined with stainless steel to help maintain a clean product.  A closed circuit television camera is used to view product during processing.  The vaults have hydraulically operated doors for convenient maintenance accessibility.  Standard and custom designs are available.

If you prefer to use concrete, we can help with the vault design.  In either case we design to a maximum level of 0.1 millirem; this is less then ½ the U.S. standard for uncontrolled areas of 0.25 millirem.  Concrete vault studies determine the minimum amount of concrete required in order to attain a safe surrounding.  Wasik Associates plans product in and out feeds as well as service entrances.  Along with a radiation study, we also determine the required exhaust for your vault.  Wasik Associates will work with your architect until final construction drawings are completed.
